“My first manager when playing for Liverpool , the legendary Bill Shankly, said to me before my first match for the team; «Just go out and drop a few hand grenades all over the place, son.»
And this is what I tell young people today. Just jump at it. Do your very best. It will demand discipline from you. The distance between reality and the dreams you want to fulfill; is discipline. You need to go the extra mile.
For me, as a player, it was about taking control over what I could control. One of the things I could control was me, myself. My physical condition and health. I made sure I was as fit as could be, by training as hard as I could.”
Successful teamwork is built on trust. It can be ruined in seconds.
Who knows better than Kevin Keegan how central teamwork is to success. One of the world`s most successful football players for decades, playing for Scunthorpe, Liverpool, Hamburger SV, Southampton and Newcastle. His career as a player was followed by an impressive career as manager for English top clubs Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester City and the England National Team.
His unique knowledge and experience is on high demand among sports people as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs worldwide. When he finds time for coaching in between his engagements as sports expert for International Broadcasting, Kevin Keegan inspires business audiences with lessons on leadership.
He emphasizes the importance of trust within teams; whether it is on the pitch or at the work space; successful teamwork is built on trust. It takes time to build and can break in a second.
It`s not about what you have won. It is how you did it.
When inspiring an enthusiastic audience in Molde, Norway, recently, Kevin shared “secrets” from on and off the pitch, on how he built strong, positive winning culture based on trust;
“As a leader I would always try to make my team comfortable with how I want them to play or what I want them to do, and in what way. It is my job to convince my team in such a way that it will make each of them better players – or employees – and a better team. They need to know what to expect from me.
The most important is not what you win but how you do it. It is always the journey that is most interesting.”
