Bernt Bodal. The immigrant fisherman and musician who chased the American Dream and worked his way to the top of the Fishing Industry, starting out as deckhand boy.
Rock your Business
Norwegian born Bernt is Chairman of American Seafoods and has served in executive positions for three decades. Bernt is also a professional bass guitarist, combining bass and business like no other.
After having toured Europe for several years in a rock band; “Høst”, Bernt Bodal packed up, spent 1000 dollars on a one-way ticket for the US and left Norway behind. For 13 years he lived the hard and dangerous life as deckhand off the Alaskan Coast.
Fishing and Flying
Bernt climbed the ladder and became president and CEO of American Seafoods Group. As if not enough, Bernt is a private pilot with more than 8000 hours of flying. And he never left the music business, still playing professional as sought after bass player world wide.
Making life and death decisions
He learned his management skills as captain on the Fishing boats, responsible for running the ships, maintaining the welfare of the crew and making the catch. Bernt had to make life or death decisions instantly. “What makes a good Fisherman are risk, hard work and quick decisions”, Bernt says. He indeed knows what he is talking about. The storms in the Alaskan Sea can be really bad.
“Stay Cool and Think Through”
His fishing experience in extreme situations has over the years taught him to never panic, to stay cool and think things through if time admits. He lives a pretty stay-cool way of life outside the Fishing Industry as well. Playing Bass with names like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Roger Daltrey of The Who.
